Graff on the Walls, Smoke in the Air

On the 2nd of August, OPB Studio hosted an evening of rap and graff infused with midsummer's night dreaming, sun gleaming, and charcoal of the BBQ beaming. Grillinz was ticketed BBQ and graffiti art event. The hiss and shake of the graff canister with the crack, bang and sizzle of brisket and burger ignited by fire married together with Cerbs' vinyl dubs reggae beats—creating a symphony for the ears, eyes and tastebuds.

Grillinz was a 'get together of artists—mainly graff, MCs and all those part of the OPB family' (Yann). Hosted at Jack's dad's garden, with the soon-to-be demolished bungalow as the canvas, the graff artists were given infinite creative freedom. Abstract lucid faces (masterfully created by Pam), shapes, script and distortions were graffed on walls and wood. The medium is the message. OPB Studio's events are spaces with unbounded creativity and infinite artistic expression.

With the billowing BBQ smoke and dubs-reggae beats permeating in the background of one of the founder's father's garden—it was intimate. Made up of around 25 artists who from 'afternoon to evening' attended to 'do some art, have some food, listen to some good music' (Yann). Masterfully, the event struck the balance between 'a network experience and a catch up with friends'. It was both original yet familiar. Busy yet intimate and relaxed. Through Grillinz 'we have connected with so many talented artists' (Yann), which signals a 'new step' for OPB to reflect its artistic tendency.

This event was the first of its kind for OPB. More private than their public cypher on a Friday, more intimate than Sound Sanctuary—OPB is looking to expand their audience whilst building up community through tight-knit events like Grillinz. Yann wishes to 'push this [events like this] as much as possible' and do something more that OPB has never done before. The aims of Yann and Jack were certainly achieved through the unbounded creative expression of the graff, from OPB Zulu shields by Whys, a MCing rat by Watcher, OPB logo by Mana and Cerbs' vibrant script. With OPB, the creative possibilities are endless.

OPB will be hosting another Grillinz event like this at the end of August. With only around 25 tickets available, make sure to look out for our announcements on @opb_studio on insta. We want you to know that OPB is 'not just MCs/music focused, we are also artistically orientated.'
